There are motherboards that support AMD processors, there are
motherboards that support Intel processors, and there are motherboards
that support both(very rare but example at link below).
http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-309-1.htm

Your motherboard likely will need to be replaced if you want to replace
the AMD with an Intel CPU

You need a different motherboard to run a Pentium than you do to run an AMD.
If you switch to an AMD 64 dual-core processor you still need a new
motherboard as your current one will not work with that type of AMD
processor. Anyone who dismisses the use of an AMD processor because it is
not an Intel processor is not someone I would put too much trust in
regarding hardware advice. See this article in which all the benchmark
tests run comparing AMD and Intel dual-core processors show that the AMDs
are the better performers

An Athlon is just fine, perhaps yours is an old one that just doesn't meet
the requirements of the software. In many cases, an Athlon will outperform
a Pentium, when using comparable AMD and Intel processors.

I don't know anything about the software you're running but your processor
is no slouch. I run an AMD 2600+ and it's as fast as I need it to be. RAM
is a big factor, how much are you running? Since I do some intensive
database work using Access, I bumped mine up to 1.5 ghz of RAM and haven't
looked back. Of course, I'd love a new 64 bit processor but I cannot
justify the cost based on my need, or should I say lack of a need, for a new
system. Besides, if I spend my money on new components, that will be less
money available for my next camera :)

I have 960 MB of ram i'm using my computer mostly for music production like,
cubase,fl, traktor dj stdio, etc, and have an external 250gb toshiba hard
drive
i have a very lot of music production software vsts synths sequencers,my
music teacher was saying that i dont think your amd processor can handle big
applications like that, he recommended an intel pentium,i notice in
fruityloops when i am editing midi files it runs awful slow, i'll play a
sample and it starts distorting, the sound goes all crackly. what
specifications, processor, ram etc, do u recommend for a pc thats jst purely
all music production
