An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition and will not affect your current programs or files if you use the following procedure: 1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional 2. Uninstall your antivirus program. 3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media. 4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse. 5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"] 6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates. 7. Reinstall your antivirus program, then defrag your hard drive. -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Enjoy all the benefits of genuine Microsoft software: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------Â--------------------------------- "Rajan" wrote: | Hi | | i have XP service pack2. Yes, you may disable Norton in lieu of uninstalling it. -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Enjoy all the benefits of genuine Microsoft software: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx -------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- "RScotti" wrote: | >2. Hi Carey, Sorry I forgot to ask something. After you install at what point do you reconnect the hardware devices? Can it be done after the first boot? If it's a supported upgrade path, and the system is running well, then an upgrade to XP should preserve programs and data, but there are no guarantees. Always have a full and complete backup. You should also always have the original media for any programs in case they have to be reinstalled. Also run the XP upgrade advisor. It's on the install CD or available from MS on the web. If you post back with more specifics about the computer system and the OS you want to upgrade then you might get more specific help. -- Rock MS MVP Windows - Shell/User |
