I have a Dell Optiplex GX100 with 128mb and when i received the computer somebody had Windows Xp on it and that took 3 hours just to boot. So i was gonna put 512mb and then i didnt want xp so i was gonna install 2000 Professional. Well by the time i remembered the 512mb i had already installed 2000 pro and now its been stuck on the boot screen for 5 days. Is it too late to try and install the ram now? What should i do? |

Turn it off, install the memory and start over. If your computer is taking three hours to boot, you have a more serious problem than lack of memory. A GX100 with 128MB should boot windows 2000 in no more than a few minutes (I've done it). Yours has trouble. Shut it down and start troubleshooting. When you've identified and fixed the problem, start over. Some places to look: Ram: download a copy of memtest86+ from www.memtest.org Hard drive: Download the diagnostic utility from the maufacturor of the hard drive. While you've got the case open, blow out all the dust, and check the capacitors for bulges and leaks. Make sure all the fans spin. Once you've done the all that, go to support.dell.com, and download the latest BIOS. This is one machine where it REALLY helps. Especially for win2k. Then go ahead and reinstall win2k. |

A GX1000 ?? Just throw it away or give it to the kids to play on. You probably could find a MUCH newer used computer at a yard sale and in the end you would have a better product. If XP was slow, why would you even think of installing 2000 on it. <olddb_97@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:1157473438.377038.186450@b28g2000cwb.googlegroups.com... >I have a Dell Optiplex GX100 with 128mb and when i received the > computer somebody had Windows Xp on it and that took 3 hours just to > boot. You have other issues here. I have a similar computer with 384 MB of RAM and running WinXP Pro. It's only used for internet use, so it's working fine. 5 days on a boot screen screams more issues involved.
