Licensing Options Advertisers

My question refers to Xp licenses. I have a domain with 12 servers and 100
XP clients.

Do I need licenses for both the server and client? (100 server user
licenses and 100 XP client licenses)

Does each PC from Dell with XP installed constitute XP license?

Thanks in advance

No. You need one license for each computer: twelve for the servers and
100 for the clients.

AFAIK, each PC Dell sells comes with an OEM version of WinXP, which
certainly includes a license.

IANAL, nor am I an expert on the way MS interprets their license
requirements. But this is how I understand things to be.

Won't the OP need to purchase a CAL for each workstation?

I guess. I said I'm not an MS licensing expert.

One XP license per PC (100 PCs)

One Client Access License (CAL) per user (100)

One server license per server (12)

XP license is completely separate for Client Access License normally. You
need one XP license for each PC to run Windows. You will then need one CAL
per each user. CALs are the license to access the server contents. You of
course need one server license per sever.

Each CAL allows each user to access the servers regardless of the server
version. Am I correct on this?

Back to XP licensing. If I have 20 Win2K clients and I want to install XP
can I just buy a volume upgrade license?

Does Dell keep a record of all these OEM licenses or am I supposed to go by
the sticker on each box? If so, for how long? I bought 25 TS licenses and
they sent some eOpen paper work.

This has just been a pain. The former IT Dept had not kept track and now I
have been handed the task of figuring out how many of each we need to buy.

CALs are generally for a specific server version.

Yes.

You need to go by the stickers on the boxes.

Licensing compliance is always a pain. There is some software
available that will help you track and even monitor software licenses
and licensing compliance.

You would probably have a better chance of getting well-informed
answers to your questions, and suggestions for methods of resolving
the issues, if you posted it to microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web
as that is where many of the network people hang out.

Good luck
