I have a bunch (63) of folders that look like: $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$, $NtUninstallKB893066$, etc. What are these and can I delete all of them? |

These folders are the uninstall info for the patches and hot fixes install on your system. If you delete them you will be unable to uninstall any of the patches/hot fixes if they give you trouble in the future. -- --------------------- Bob E. Do you mean that I have to keep these forever???? Can those files be moved into a folder somewhere and still be found by the OS? Thanks for the clarification as to function. anon wrote: > Do you mean that I have to keep these forever???? No, it's your choice. As Bob said, if you delete them you won't be able to remove the associated hotfix. If you are confident that you'll never need to remove it, then feel free to delete the uninstall file. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup > Can those files be moved into a folder somewhere and still be found > by the OS? > > Thanks for the clarification as to function. > > > "Bob Eyster" <reyster1@comcast.net> wrote in message > news:epmWr001GHA.1292@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >> These folders are the uninstall info for the patches and hot fixes >> install on your system. No, You can delete then if you like, but if you do you will not be able to uninstall the related hotfixes. -- --------------------- Bob E. No my question was can I move those to another folder - if so can the OS find them to uninstall the hotfixes? If you really want to keep them, copy them to CD, another hard drive etc. Then if you want to uninstall, copy them back to the original location. Just copy to CD. If you need to remove an update, copy that uninstall folder from the CD to C:\Windows. -- Rock [MVP Windows Shell/User] |

Because I have 60+ of these, I wanted to put them in a C:windows\tempstore folder so they did not take several screens just to get to the 'real' windows folders. I see, when I need to use the uninstall folder, I should put that folder back in the C:widows folder so the OS can find it. I understand that the OS cannot find the necessary uninstall folder if it is not in the C:windows folder - correct? No, the OS needs them to be in the Windows directory. -- --------------------- Bob E. Those are the uninstall files for the various updates and can be safely deleted. Typically I go through and delete them all every few months. If an update has not caused a problem in a few weeks to a month, it probably never will. You can save them to CD, another hard drive etc if you really want to, but I see no need. The longer an update is installed, the more likely there will be problems related to its uninstall.
