MBR Options Advertisers

Posted this on the Microsoft Windows XP Newsgroups website and a guy by the
name of Rock put a link up and it took me here so this is my question:

Link here :
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general&
lang=en&cr=US&mid=0695a084-5d89-4eed-8a9d-4c5fd6ebc475)

I

have 3 HDD's

1 Windows XP Pro - 120GB - currently drive letter C

2 Windows Vista Ultimate (beta 5384) - 200GB - currently drive letter D.
(have d/loaded RC1 and plan to install it on this HDD)

3 Windows XP Pro - 200GB - currently drive letter E

I just did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on drive C and when the PC
loads up there is no option to boot into the other two drives. Boots
straight
into drive C.

What gives and how can I get this resolved / fix?

Thanks for your help

God Bless

I know that installing an older version of MS Windows after a newer =
version, you may have issues. You have to install older versions in =
order that they were released. Example: Install 2000, followed by XP =
Pro, Followed by Vista. Also, you are using a older version of Vista. =
I would recommend updating to RC1.

Re: MBR Options Advertisers

You have the XP drive as your system drive and when you installed XP you
caused 2 problems
1. You overwrote the Vista MBR with the XP MBR
2. You overwrote the Vista boot files on the system drive (C)

You also seem to have a boot.ini with only the one system in it. You can
add another record to your boot.ini to access the other XP system.
Can't help with restoring your Vista boot file short of reinstalling Vista.
Hopefully someone else can help. If the boot file were there, you could use
VistaBootPro to repair the MBR, but I don't think you can create a boot file
with it.

Re: MBR Options Advertisers

Thanks for your help John, much appreciated.
This is the boot.ini file that shows under My Computer / Advanced /
Settings - Start up and Recovery / System Startup - edit

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

So how do I add another boot.ini file to get into drive E?
I don't care too much about Vista as I have d/loaded RC1 and plan to install
it sometime.

Thanks for your help

God Bless

duplicate this part of your entry and change the description between the " "
so you will recognise it. Then change the rdisk from 0 to 2 as I have done
in the example. If this doesn't work try 1 as the risc order doesn't always
match computer management.

And if you boot from the Vista DVD you can let it do a repair, from the advanced
option in setup, to get the Vista bootloader back.

This should be what you are looking for:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919529/en-us
Note though that some of the commands have changed in RC1 for instance where
you type -set is now /set
