Hello! I am new using this site. Hopefully someone can help me on this. I am working on a pc that has XP OS, when you turn on the PC everything starts normal but I get a black screen and a blinking cursor and that is it. At first it was saying that the OS was not found, so I went ahead and inserted the recovery cd for it, but nothing. This PC is at work, so I have no idea what could have happened to the system in order for it to stop working. Please help...thank you! |

Get you access the start up choices? Usually you can get at this by tapping the F8 key or ESC key during the boot process. You could then try using the "last known good configuration" or "Safe Mode" choice to see if you can get into either. If you have or can borrow an XP disk then you could insert that and try to boot. The disk is bootable so you should see a screen with "hit any key to boot from CD" or something to that effect down the bottom. Do that and see if it boots to the desktop. If you have an XP CD then you could get into the recovery console and run the check disk utility which may clear any bad flag that is causing this black window. Sometimes there is a hidden warning message behind that black window and the system is waiting for you response to it and you can't respond as you don't see it. This has been known to happen so getting into the recovery console and typing chkdsk /r will run the full 5 scans and recover any bad sectors as well as remove the flag that maybe causing you the problem. I have opened up the pc and unplugged here and there and let it sit open for a while. Then I plugged everything up again and plugged the power to it and the pc came on. No, I couldn't get to the f11 to get to the setup. I couldn't do anything with it. But it is back up and running and I am doing some configurations to it. I did get a message that the hard drive is bad. So I will have to replace it. thank you for your help. I will be coming back for more help on anything else. First thing to try is a restore.... reboot tapping F8 every couple of seconds until screen come up.... then select restore or 'last configuration that worked'. Another thing you may try from safe mode.... go to My Computer, clicking Local disc (Hard drive) then click it's properties, in the New window click tools tab (2nd from top left), in the new Error Checking window clicking the first option 'Check Now' and then tick by clicking the two boxes, one says 'Check for Sytem file errors''and the other say 'Check and repair bad segments', click start and reboot. This operation may take quite awhile, here we are checking for file system errors and checking the disc for bad segments. The fault could be anything from a virus to a faulty hard drive. One thing you can do is to try another hard drive with any OS on..... to see if it tries to boot, this will confirm one or the other. Davy |
