Possible reasons: 1. Spywares corrupted system modules or HTML components of an applet. 2. Some modules are not registered properly. Run sfc /scannow from Safe Mode. Download HiJackThis and kill unwanted entries: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html Try IEFix utility: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm Does the same thing happen in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking Mode also? Any chance you are running PowerChute software? |

1. Run Msconfig.exe from Run > switch to Startup > tick "Disable All" 2. Next switch to services tab > switch to services > tick "Hide all M$ services" > tick "Disable all" 3. Restart OK, I'm going to try your latest suggestions. I did run HijackThis and removed an unrecognized proxy entry, even though IE was not configured to run it. By the way, IE has never been a problem, just windows Explorer. I ran IEFix and it didn't improve anything. After running IE fix, I was testing windows explorer and when I get to the "Recycle Bin" folder I get this error: "Internet Explorer Script Error" An error has occurred in the script on this page. Error: 'FileList.Folder' is null or not an object Code: 0 URL: file/c:\\WINNT\Web\recycle.htt Well, i reinstalled IE 6 SP1 and things worked OK. Then i did a windows update (which also would not run under the previous conditions) and it installed fine. Now I'm getting the same results as before (the gray box in windows explorer, red "X" in Control panel, etc.) I'm going to reinstall IE 6 again, but not the latest security patches. |
